Let’s talk about Exfoliation?

Exfoliation

There's just something about it that feels refreshing and freeing — almost like setting our complexion back to its natural, fresh state.

Aside from clearing away dry and dead skin, a regular exfoliation habit increases the skin's radiance, clarity, and youthfulness—and that's just the start!

Exfoliating is an important step in your routine since dead skin basically becomes a barrier between your skin and serums. By removing it you allow everything to work much better.

Generally, skin should be exfoliated only one to two times per week to help expedite skin cell turnover without causing damage*.

Signs of over-exfoliation include…

  • irritation, burning, or peeling

  • redness and inflammation

  • breakouts (especially small pimples)

  • increased sensitivity to other products in your routine

Physical exfoliants (scrubs, grains etc) are my least favorite.

They tend to be too harsh so I prefer Chemical Exfoliants as they use ingredients that react with the outer skin surface to separate off the outermost cell layers.

Ex: alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs).

Lactic acid and glycolic acid are the most common AHAs. Salicylic acid is a much-loved BHA.

TIP: Test a gentle lactic acid (AHA) exfoliator one week, then switch to a salicylic acid (BHA) product the next and note how your skin responds. Pick one to move forward with. In general, sensitive and dry skin types will love lactic or glycolic acids; oily or acne-prone skin does well with salicylic.

Proper exfoliation leaves a fresh, healthy, and fully ‘cleansed’ epidermal surface.

So the moral of this skin care story?

It’s one beauty category where less really is more.

Cheers,

Rosie
